Model One – Lacquered

The Model One Lacquered is a re-fashioning of our classic European oak, single driver loudspeaker. Designed for those who are looking for a finish that demands attention, the range of colours and  custom possibilities we offer are almost endless. 

 Just like its oak originator, the Model One – Lacquered  is designed to deliver extremely lifelike sound reproduction for all genres of music. From classical to jazz and from electronic to blues, R&B, reggae and full on rock.  The Model One Lacquered faithfully reproduces the full dynamics of the original recording. It’s shallow drive cone delivers a very wide and natural soundstage. Close your eyes and the Model One enclosures completely disappear, replaced by the musicians performing before you!

For the Model One – Lacquered, we selected very high density, 3cm Baltic birch instead of solid oak. This was for three main reasons: Firstly, because we could not bring ourselves to spray lacquer onto natural oak. Secondly, Baltic birch has an ultra smooth surface that makes it much more suitable for receiving undercoat and several layers of finish (up to 12 in total)!  Lastly, our grade of Baltic Birch ply is extremely rigid, and is the closest we can get acoustically, to the properties of the natural oak used in our classic, Model One – Oak loudspeakers.

 

The same degree of craftsmanship goes into making the Model One Lacquered as the oak.  Each enclosure is hand built, without nails, screws or internal battens. Where working birch ply can be more ‘forgiving’ than oak, the skills required to produce our extremely high quality finish are considerable. In addition to the application of multiple preparation base coats, each pigment layer is hand sanded and polished between coats, building up for the final top coats of lacquer.

The drive cones too, receive a great deal of attention. They are tested three times: once on the bench for matching (prior to their 360 hour run in), then again after run in and finally in their enclosures.  Our run-in tracks vary from classical to rock music, from jazz to folk and from speech to large scale opera. This means your Model One loudspeakers will be ready to play when you receive them, with minimal additional run in required.

Pairing: Because our Model One Lacqured loudspeakers deliver so much detail, they are able to capture the characteristics of the equipment upstream from them. For example, if you like the warm midrange of a particular classic Class A amplifier, then that’s what you’ll hear. Even the subtle changes from one Dac to another, will allow you an endless choice in pairing possibilities.  We always are here to advise and help you.
