Pearl Acoustics Team

Passionate about music

Handmade, bespoke HiFi equipment.

Established in 2013, Pearl Acoustics is a privately owned HiFi equipment and loudspeaker manufacturer, focused on building products for the domestic Hi-Fi market. It was the brainchild of Harley Lovegrove, a business man and entrepreneur who is totally passionate about music and HiFi and who had been designing loudspeaker enclosures since the age of nine. However, it was his daughter Summer (also a music geek) who took the reins and converted her father’s idea into a working business that today, has customers all over the world.

Brought up in south east England (some say the centre of the world’s loudspeaker design in the 1960’s, with both KEF and Lowther being in the vicinity) Harley’s passion for HiFi & loudspeaker building was cemented by regular visits to the famous ‘Lowther’ loudspeaker company factory, which was conveniently located on the way home from his school in Bromley.

Our story begins with the ‘Model One’, single driver loudspeaker (formerly known as ‘The Sibelius’, after Harley’s admiration for the Finnish composers’ violin concerto, seven symphonies and other works). An 18 year project from its first iteration in 1995, the Model One’s history is a story in itself. Today his creation  is honored with his signature.

In 2022, Ajay Verma joined the management team. Having a degree in mathematics from London University, Ajay’s passion has always been music and electronics. Being the son of an electronics engineer, Ajay started experimenting and making small transistor amplifiers around the same age as Harley started building loudspeakers. Ajay’s incredible knowledge of everything ‘HiFi’ and his natural leaning towards helping people, puts him in the ideal role at Pearl Acoustics as our Customer Services and Technical director, all in one.

In 2023, the Pearl Acoustics management team was completed with the recruitment of Dries Ceuleers. With a degree in acoustics and a passion for manufacturing,  Dries has taken on the role of Production Director. Like Summer, Harley and Ajay, Dries is also passionate about music – but he takes it one stage further by playing the saxophone and percussion on a semi-professional basis.  Our webmaster, Bjorn Engels too is a musician, playing electric bass in local bands.

In 2023, Harley stepped back from the day to day running of the bussiness but remains heavily involved in supporting the team when required and making content for the Pearl Acoustics YouTube channel.

Company Structure: Pearl Acoustics, consists of two companies: Pearl Acoustics Ltd. which is registered in Chatham, in  the UK and Pearl Acoustics Distribution bv, which is registered in Zelem, Belgium. Pearl Acoustics Distribution bv is responsible for the manufacturing, sales and distribution of all Pearl Acoustics’ products, while Pearl Acoustics Ltd. is responsible for all R&D, new product development, company IP and global branding.

At Pearl Acoustics, we have three key words that define our entire approach to everything we do do, from designing products to running our company:

Purity, Simplicity and Sustainability.

Purity in design and sound, and in the transparent and empathic way we work with our customers, suppliers and each other.

Simplicity in design, and in everything we do – including our business model and internal processes.

Sustainability in the products we make, and the way we make and distribute them.

We like to think that our ecological footprint is, in part, offset in the knowledge that each of our products is designed to last for decades, with the absolute minimum of maintenance. In this way, we hope they will be cherished and handed down from one generation to the next.

Behind the name

Pearl Acoustics

It is always tricky naming a business but from the beginning, it was clear that we wanted a name that encapsulated what we were trying to achieve: purity in design and function. We wanted to reflect timelessness, and the use of natural products. We felt that the beauty in a pearl reflected what we were aiming for. If you look closely, you will find the pearl in the dot on the eye in our logo!

Model One

In 2023, Harley handed over his duties in the day to day running of Pearl Acoustics to the team, so he could focus more of his time recording classical music and working with the young musicians from Young Belgian Talent.  Two years later, the team decided to honour Harley’s design and contribution to the company, by placing his signature on the back of every loudspeaker that leaves the workshop. And to re-brand The Sibelius to Model One. They wanted to celebrate that; his loudspeaker design was the first product that Pearl Acoustics brought to market, that it truly is ‘one of a kind’ in the market, and of course, because it only has one driver!

My Top Ten ‘Must Have’ Albums!

  1. Dippin’ – Hank Mobley. (The song Recado Bossa Nova made jazz and soloing make sense to me).
  2. Soul station – Hank Mobley. (This is my favourite overall jazz album).
  3. Culcha Vulcha – Snarky Puppy. (The ultimate ‘stankface generating’/groovy album).
  4. Face lift – Alice in Chains. (The musical equivalent of being angry and releasing that anger).
  5. Wasting light – Foo fighters. (My goto album to get my heartrate up or for a workout. Haven’t found any albums that can energize me as much as this one).
  6. Silk degrees – Boz Scaggs. (Not sure what I could say about this, it feels like a perfect album. Maybe a bit too clean/perfect)?
  7. Momentum – Joshua Redman Elastic Band. (It took a while before I learned to appreciate the traditional swing in jazz. I eased into that with more groovy albums like this one).
  8. My songs – Sting (live). (All his best songs, and I feel like Sting is even better in when playing live).
  9. Bring on the Night – Sting (live). (Same as above, but the added ‘jazz’ just works so well for me).
  10. Stadium Arcadium – Red Hot Chillie Peppers. (This is first time I experienced the power of songs in the context of a complete album. These songs are reenforced by context of the album).

Ajay Verma

Ajay has a degree in mathematics from the Kings College, London. His work experience, prior to Pearl Acoustics ranges from project and program management in the financial sector, to running his own High-end HiFi consultancy business in London.

Ajay is the son of an electronics engineer and there was nothing he enjoyed more as a very young child, than playing with his father’s work tools. By the age of nine, he was building his own simple transistor amplifiers, and experimenting with all things electronic. His knowledge of HiFi, from products to technology is second to none. Ajay plays the acoustic guitar, and like his Pearl Acoustics colleagues, his main passion in life is music. Ajay joined the Pearl Acoustics team in 2021, becoming a director in 2022.

Harley Lovegrove

Born into an artistic family in SE London in the late 1950’s, Harley’s mother was an abstract painter and his father an Architect. From his mother he got his love of jazz and folk and literature, and from his father everything classical. Classical music has been his first and foremost companion all his life with; rock, blues, R&B, Reggae, and every genre with soul becoming welcome diversions along the way.

In his younger years he played the viola and piano, then later the guitar. He studied classical guitar and composition in the Blackheath Conservatoire of Music, and the history of music and music theory at Morley College in London. It was always his desire to become a conductor of a symphony orchestra but life set him on a different course, a journey into the world of international business and management. He is the author of four management books: ‘Making a Difference’, ‘Inspirational Leadership’, ‘Transition’, and ‘The Change Managers’ Handbook’. And yet, all the while, HiFi (and in particular loudspeaker building) was always there, investing time in refining the mechanics by which captured electrical signals are finally converted into sound.

In 2010, with the establishment of a not-for-profit organisation supporting outstandingly gifted, young, classical musicians, Harley threw himself headfirst into the world of making classical recordings. His aim, to deliver results that were extremely accurate and lifelike, recordings that could technically stand alongside some of the best classical recordings of all time. As Harley often quotes “Life is a progression towards Mozart”.

For me speaker building is more like instrument making. It’s a passion and a craft all at once. Sure there is science too but not many Luthiers know much about science, they don’t need to test their cellos, violins or classical guitars in anechoic chambers to know if they are any good or not. All I have done over these last five decades is to try to design and build the best possible enclosures and then to find really great drivers (ones that can cover the widest possible frequency range effortlessly). By teaming up with Mark Fenlon of Mark Audio, I now have my own custom drive units made exclusively for all our loudspeakers“.
