Born out of necessity
The Pearl Acoustics ‘COHERENCE’ was born out of necessity. It’s raison d’être being to improve to the experience of record playback by introducing a viscoelastic damping layer, that allows your stylus to extract the microscopic data in your record, free from unwanted vibration.
Why The Pearl Acoustics COHERENCE mat works so well
Its long chain, Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) core has been carefully chosen for its unique ability towards vibration management. Offering:
- high internal damping
- flexibility, without being too soft
- stability across temperature & humidity
- non-reactive with vinyl
- easy to clean – dust free
Vibration damping
- motor noise
- bearing noise
- airborne sound from speakers
- resonance in the platter or record itself
What happens:
- Vibrations enter the mat
- The COHERENCE mat converts mechanical energy into heat through internal friction
- Less vibration reaches the stylus
Result: Reduced resonance feedback
- lower background noise
- cleaner midrange
- less harsh treble
- Improved dynamic range

Better Record–Platter Coupling
Vinyl records are rarely perfectly flat.
The COHERENCE mat:
- conforms the record surface to the mat
- increases contact area
- reduces micro-vibrations within the record itself
Improved coupling means:
- tighter bass
- more stable imaging
Reduced Static Electricity & Dust
Felt mats tend to attract and trap dust within the small cavities between their fibres. Dust from the underside of records can easily become embedded in the felt, where it remains until the next record is placed on the mat.
When a record is cleaned while resting on a felt mat, it often becomes slightly charged. This static charge can draw dust out of the felt’s cavities and onto the underside of the record. As a result, when the record is turned over, it is often noticeably dirtier than when it was first placed on the mat.
The COHERENCE mat, with its ultra-smooth surface, has no cavities where dust can accumulate or become trapped. In addition, the material is far less prone to building up static electricity.
Benefits:
- Fewer dust particles are transferred to the record
- Reduced static discharge noise through the cartridge
- The mat stays on the platter when the record is lifted, avoiding the common problem of the mat lifting with the LP after playback

Suppression of Record Resonance
Vinyl has its own natural resonant frequency.
When the stylus excites the groove, the record can resonate like a drum skin.
The COHERENCE mat helps by:
- absorbing energy from the record
- preventing resonance from reflecting back into the stylus
This improves tracking stability.
Better Energy Control for the Stylus–Tonearm System
The stylus generates mechanical energy as it traces the groove.
Some of that energy travels into the record and to the mat and to the platter.
stylus → record → mat → platter
The COHERENCE mat absorbs this energy effectively; with less vibration returning to the stylus.
This can improve:
- tracking accuracy = less distortion
- micro-detail retrieval
- better channel separation
